What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathic Medicine is a multi-modal practice which includes areas of conventional medicine such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Chemistry and Biochemistry but additionally uses natural healing methods such as Nutrition, Medicinal Nutrition, Phytotherapy (herbal remedies), Chinese Methodologies and Homeopathy among others, to treat the source rather than the symptoms. Naturopathy is a holistic system of complementary medicine that treats the mind, body and soul and views each person as a unique individual requiring unique, personalized treatment.

The five guiding principles of Naturopathy:

  1. Strengthening the body's ability to heal itself while DOING NO HARM;
  2. Seeing the individual as a whole comprised of body, mind and soul;
  3. Ascertaining and treating the source of ailment rather than the symptoms, which are but evidence of the body's attempting to heal itself;
  4. A Naturopath is more teacher than healer whose function is to guide.
  5. Prevention is the most effective method of treatment.

How it works

A new client arriving for the first time will be asked to bring detailed information with them, including a blood workup, the medications they are currently using and any nutritional supplements they are taking. The initial interview will last for one and a half to two hours. In depth information will be gathered about medical and personal history and the client's current life situation. A second follow-up meeting will then be scheduled for within the next week.

Recommendations will be given during the second meeting, which lasts for about an hour. A follow-up visit is scheduled for two weeks following the start of the treatment program. At this time the need and frequency of future visits will be decided.
